LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Westra Construction Co.
In 2001, teachers and students from the new Chavez Elementary School filed a lawsuit against the building company for allegedly allowing mold to grow during construction. Plaintiffs reported suffering from asthma and other respiratory problems. After health conditions showed up, the school was closed, torn open, cleaned and reconstructed to rid classrooms of mold. Westra has agreed to pay a $650,000 settlement and previously forgave $484,000 in construction costs to the Madison Metropolitan School District.
An investigation found that damp interior walls and other moisture problems had been allowed to go unchecked, leading to mold along ceiling tiles, baseboards and other parts of the building. (Apr-22-06) [DULUTH NEWS TRIBUNE]
