In 2001, Hollywood film studios and recording companies threatened to file a lawsuit against the file sharing company alleging patent infringement regarding online music services. BearShare agreed to pay $30 million to avoid potential copyright infringement lawsuits. BearShare software distributor, Free Peers Inc., has also agreed to close up shop and not operate any unlicensed online music services. (May-04-06)
