Three inmates at the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility filed a lawsuit over alleged lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender abuse. The plaintiffs claimed they were physically and emotionally abused by guards because of their sexual orientation. The state does not admit wrongdoing, but has agreed to a $625,000 settlement. The state must also create policies against physical and verbal abuse of inmates perceived to be lesbian, bisexual, gay or transgender. (May-10-06) [ HOUSTON CHRONICLE ]
