Green Atlas Shipping Co.

In 1999, the 660 foot New Carissa ran aground on an Oregon beach. During efforts to burn off its engine fuel, the ship snapped in half, sent fuel into Coos Bay and contaminated its oyster beds. The Oregon State Land Board filed charges against the shipping company to cover cleanup costs. Green Atlas has agreed to a $22 million settlement; $19 million will be paid to the Emergency Board for removal of the stern and the remaining $3 million will pay for legal costs.
