LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION

Federal Government

Wen Ho Lee, a former Los Alamos nuclear physicist, was accused of espionage, imprisoned and then released. Government officials allegedly manipulated and mislead the news media into producing stories that falsely portrayed the Chinese American as a devious master spy and threat to the American people. The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press, the Washington Post and ABC received and published Lee's personal information, in violation of the Privacy Act from anonymous and confidential sources. Lee, a U.S. citizen for more than 30 years, filed a civil rights lawsuit against the federal government and the five media companies for publishing fabricated and distorted news stories. The federal government and the five media companies have agreed to pay a settlement of $1.6 million. (Jun-06-06) [SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE]
