Harbor-UCLA Medical Center

On April 16, 2004, Henry Portillo was prescribed a medication called thioguanine, but was given mercaptopurine, a potent medication intended to be prescribed for only four days per chemotherapy cycle. Henry was given the drug for two entire cycles over a 28 day period. He began to show signs of liver failure and was transferred to the intensive care unit. Nine-year-old Henry died on May 20 of advanced liver failure primarily as a result of mercaptopurine toxicity. His family filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the hospital. Harbor-UCLA Medical Center has agreed to pay a $200,000 settlement. (Jun-06-06) [DAILY BREEZE]
