City of Detroit

In February 2004, school officials and police conducted a sweep to search students at Mumford High. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan sued Detroit public schools on behalf of students whose backpacks, clothing and other items were searched without reasonable suspicion. The city and its police department will pay more than $32,000 in damages and attorney fees to the students who sued. As well, Detroit public schools will no longer carry out indiscriminate student searches and school officials cannot conduct random sweeps to search students unless they have reasonable evidence that the student violated school rules.
