City of Chicago

In May 2002, Ronyale White was fatally shot by her estranged husband, David Louis Drexel. White had an order of protection against Drexel at the time. White had called 911 but 17 minutes elapsed between White's first call and Chicago police officers' arrival on the scene. After the murder, Illinois Supreme Court ruled that under the Illinois Domestic Violence Act, police officials could be sued if their conduct was found to be "willful and wanton." The officers were suspended for 15 days and returned to work in November 2003. Drexel was convicted of murder in 2005 and sentenced to life in prison. The city of Chicago has settled in principal with White's estate for $4.25 million. (Jun-22-06) [CHICAGO TRIBUNE]
