Colonial HealthCare

A 92-year-old man who was admitted to the facility received diabetes medication to lower his blood sugar level although he did not have the disorder. He died nine days later of aspiration pneumonia. A 64-year-old woman was taken to the facility with multiple health problems. Her physician ordered a device to provide increased oxygen during sleep for sleep apnea and her file noted to perform CPR in case of cardiac arrest. The same day she was admitted, the woman was found with no pulse and declared dead. The facility failed to provide an oxygen device and no CPR was initiated. An investigation by the California Department of Health Services found that inadequate care of two residents at the licensed care facility led to their deaths. Horizon West operates the 230 bed skilled nursing facility north of Auburn. Colonial HealthCare has been handed two $80,000 fines for the deaths. Colonial HealthCare is appealing both decisions by the state health department. (Aug-18-06) [AUBURN JOURNAL]
