Mike and Greg Whitaker

Sierra Club members and a group of concerned residents filed a lawsuit against the DeKalb County hog farm owners for allegedly polluting streams that flow into the Tennessee River. The 2,400 hog farm stuck up the air and possibly contaminated water quality. Under the terms of the settlement, the Whitakers have been ordered to pay the defendants $100,000 within 30 days. They must also plant barriers of trees to help stop the odor from spreading, plant grass buffers and build berms to help stop or absorb hog waste runoff. They must also repair and maintain spraying equipment used in applying the waste to their fields as a fertilizer. In addition, the Whitakers were ordered to conduct periodic soil and water tests to protect against excessive amounts of nutrients in the soil and the contamination of nearby streams.
