City of Miami, FL
Miami - During the free trade protests in 2003, documentary film producer Carl Kesser was hit in the head with a mesh covered ball of lead pellets fired by police. The beanbag lodged under Kesser's right temple and required a three hour operation to remove. The cinematographer's forehead was left partially paralyzed and he had to undergo physical therapy because he could not fully open his mouth. Kesser filed a lawsuit against the city of Miami alleging negligence. The city agreed to pay $180,000 to Kesser for his injuries. (Sep-13-06)
