Dr. Leslie King and Dr. Ira Spector
Rockville Centre - In 1999, pregnant Karen Sheppard suffered from uterine fibroids; her doctors believed this condition would not allow her to carry the fetus to term. Dr. Leslie King advised Sheppard to terminate the pregnancy and referred her to a second doctor, Ira Spector. King administered a non-surgical abortion with the drug methotrexate while Sheppard was thought to be in her seventh week of pregnancy. Sheppard sought a second opinion after the procedure and found she was actually 28 weeks pregnant. Sheppard gave birth to Jo'ell on March 3, 2000. The infant suffered from fetal methotrexate syndrome and serious congenital problems. Sheppard filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the two doctors claiming an insignificant dose of the drug lead to the botched abortion. Sheppard and her injured son won nearly $4.1 million in the settlement. (Sep-20-06)
