Carilion Medical Center

Roanoke - On October 5, 2004 Quentin Jones went to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for gastrointestinal surgery. Dr. John Hagy Jr. and Dr. George Min performed the surgery to remove Jones' gallbladder and part of his intestine. As Jones recuperated in the surgical intensive care unit, Hagy went out of town, leaving his patient in residents' care. Jones' condition began to deteriorate. During the night of October 10, 2004 he choked on his own vomit, due to a blockage in his intestines caused by the surgery; he was pronounced dead at 3:45 a.m. October 11, 2004. Jones' family filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the medical center. Carilion Medical Center has accepted responsibility for Jones' death and settled with Jones' family for $1 million.
