Vito's
Iowa City, IA - On New Year's Eve 2003, Daniel Corbett was served alcohol from Vito's Bar and the Union Bar. After leaving the bars, Corbett allegedly attacked Michael Kearney and smashed his head into a concrete wall. Kearney died of a blood clot in his brain resulting from a fractured skull. Corbett claimed self-defense, but police said the attack was unprovoked and that the two men had not previously met. Corbett pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years. Michael's dad, Paul Kearney filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the two bars. The Union Bar settled for an undisclosed amount. Judge Mitchell Turner has awarded the father of the former University of Iowa student more than $448,000 for serving alcohol to his son's attacker from Vito's. (Oct-12-06)
