Sempra Energy
San Diego, CA: California State Attorney General Bill Lockyer and the California Public Utilities Commission filed charges against Sempra alleging it wrongly diverted natural gas from power plants in San Diego County to generators in Mexico during the 2000 and 2001 energy crisis. Energy shortages prompted blackouts in California and led to record-high prices for electricity and natural gas, the main source of fuel for the state's power generators. The case alleged Sempra cut gas supplies on 17 occasions to several San Diego County merchant power plants. SDG&E and Southern California Gas obtained permission from California utility regulators to build a gas pipeline to Baja, Mexico, but promised it would not affect the supply of natural gas to power plants in Southern California. Sempra Energy has agreed to pay $5.7 million to settle the lawsuit for wrongly diverting natural gas. (Oct-14-06)
