Cochran, Scheck, & Neufeld Legal Malpractice Settlement
Cochran, Scheck & Neufeld
In 1994, Lee Long was convicted of raping a woman in her car; he spent six years in prison. In 2000, an investigation uncovered evidence that showed that he did not commit the crime. Long was freed and hired the law firm to represent him in a wrongful imprisonment case against the state of New York after his rape conviction had been overturned. Lawyers Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld missed a deadline for filing his wrongful imprisonment claim. The New York State Court of Claims threw out Long's lawsuit noting it had been filed improperly and too late. Long then filed a legal malpractice lawsuit against Barry Scheck, Peter Neufeld, Nick Joel Brustin, and the law firm of Cochran, Scheck & Neufeld. Scheck and Neufeld have agreed to pay $900,000 for malpractice. (Nov-21-06)
