Metropolitan Transportation Authority et al.
Long Island, NY: In February 2003, 48-year-old Youlanda Scott was sitting on a bench when a Long Island Bus smashed into the Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus terminal. The driver of the bus lost control due to a mechanical problem. Large pieces of glass and metal flew through the air and Scott became trapped beneath metal debris. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors unsuccessfully attempted to save one leg. With both legs severed, Scott filed a lawsuit against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Cummins Engine Co., which manufactured parts of the bus, and Nassau County. A Nassau State Supreme Court justice confirmed Scott won a $10 million settlement from the three defendants. (Nov-20-06)
