Chicago Police Officer Christopher Berlanga

Gary, IN: William Alvarez and Thomas Miller were passengers in Kristina Hiltunen's car. She ran a red light at an intersection and collided with off duty police officer Christopher Berlanga. Miller suffered severe injuries and was kept in a medically induced coma for weeks after the accident. Alvarez died of blunt force trauma. Hiltunen tested positive for opiates and marijuana and had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.07; she was driving up to 65 mph in a 35 mph zone. Police officer Berlanga's blood alcohol concentration was 0.19. A lawsuit was filed against Berlanga on behalf of Alvarez's 11-year-old daughter and Miller.
