Secure Computer
Seattle, WA: Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna filed a lawsuit against the company for allegedly deceiving consumers into buying its anti-spyware software, called Spyware Cleaner. The lawsuit was filed in Seattle District Court and claimed Secure Computer violated the state's anti-spyware act by misrepresenting security problems to get consumers to buy software. The lawsuit also alleged violations of the federal Commercial Electronic Mail and Consumer Protection Acts and the CAN-SPAM Act. Secure Computer placed Internet pop-up ads on thousands of Websites that would suggest their computer was infected with spyware. Secure Computer offered users a free computer scan, which always found infections, even on clean computers. To remove the fictional spyware, consumers were encouraged to pay $49.95 for the full version of Spyware Cleaner. Washington State has reached a $1 million settlement with Secure Computer.
