German Olympic Sports Union and German Federal Government
Frankfurt, Germany: Before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, East Germany implemented a government run systematic doping program to its athletes. Most of the communist country's sporting achievements were fueled by performance enhancing drugs. Many athletes were given drugs without their knowledge while still teenagers and claimed they suffered permanent health problems because of steroid use. Charges were filed against the German Olympic Sports Union and German Federal Government seeking compensation for health related problems. The German Olympic Sports Union and the federal government will share the $2.03 million cost of the settlement. The 167 recognized victims will each receive $12,210. (Dec-13-06)
