Washington State Department of Transportation and Juliann Odom

Seattle, WA: On December 15, 2004, Juliann Odom's southbound Ford Explorer went onto the shoulder, veered across three lanes of traffic, broke through a cable barrier in the median and slammed into a Chevrolet Suburban and a Toyota Tundra pickup truck in the northbound lanes. Eighteen year old Marijke Holschen died in the fiery pileup; her mother, younger sister and two younger brothers were injured. Holschen's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Washington State Department of Transportation claiming the cable barriers on Interstate 5 in Marysville were incorrectly installed. The Washington State Department of Transportation has agreed to pay the family a $2 million settlement; Odom is responsible for $7 million. (Dec-14-06) [SEATTLE POST INTELLIGENCER: CAR CRASH]
