Diocese of Norwich
Norwich, CT: Michael Nelligan accused Rev. Bruno Primavera of molesting him while Primavera served at St. Mark's Church in Westbrook, CT. Primavera was a visiting priest in the Diocese of Norwich from 1978 to 1980. Nelligan, now 44, was a 15-year-old altar boy at the time. Robert Reardon, Nelligan's attorney pointed out that the Diocese of Norwich had insight into Primavera's conduct and had not acted responsibly. He quoted from a letter sent by Canada's Diocese of Toronto to Norwich in 1978 when Primavera arrived in Norwich, indicating that he had "a tendency to seek out the companionship of young teenage boys on a one-to-one basis." Albeit, not specifying sexual misconduct. Primavera has been involved in several similar lawsuits and sex offenses involving teenage boys and last year saw the diocese settle one for $1.1 million. The Diocese has settled the Nelligan suit for $2 million which church spokespersons hope, will be spent to get help for Nelligan's mental anguish. (Jan-23-07)
