Bernardo Heights Country Club
San Diego, CA: A lesbian couple, B. Birgit Koebke and Kendall French, filed a lawsuit against the Bernardo Heights Country Club that resulted in a landmark state Supreme Court ruling in 2005. Koebke and French alleged Bernardo Heights Country Club, located in Rancho Bernardo, violated state law and discriminated against them because of their sexual orientation and their marital status. Though they cannot marry under state law, they are registered domestic partners. The pretrial verdicts prompted appeals that reached the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in August of that year, stating that businesses must offer registered domestic partners in the state of California the same benefits offered to married couples. Two months after the ruling, the country club began providing Koebke and French the benefits they had been seeking. The terms of the settlement agreement, reached in January 2007, were not disclosed in court documents. Attorney H. Paul Kondrick, who represented the couple, said the terms of the agreement are confidential. (Jan-24-07)
