Adrian, MI: A lawsuit brought by the family of Jesalynn Simons in 2004, against Michigan State Police and a trooper who fired a shot causing a fatal leg injury to Simmons, said that the shooting was not justified. A $650,000 settlement was accepted in Lenawee County Circuit Court to end the lawsuit when Judge Timothy Pickard rejected a motion to dismiss the case based on a claim the trooper acted in self-defense. The case was resolved without any finding of which side in the case was right or wrong in spite of videotape evidence.
