Dr. Perry Hearn and Affiliated Professional Services, Inc.
Boston, MA: Norwell physician, Perry Hearn, and Affiliated Professional Services, Inc. (APS), based in Wareham, MA have agreed to pay $150,000 and $100,000 to settle allegations that they submitted false claims to the Medicare and Medicaid programs for office and nursing home visits performed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants without any physician supervision.
The matter was investigated by the US Department of Health and Human Services and The Office of the Inspector General. The settlement reached resolve charges that Dr. Hearn and APS abused the system by billing the services of nurse practitioner and physician assistants as if they had been performed by him personally, when in fact a physician was not even on the premises at the time the services were performed. In such a situation, the amount of Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement for the service is only 85 % of the amount of the reimbursement that would have issued if the physician had performed the service personally.
As part of his settlement, Dr. Hearn has entered into a compliance program with the Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure the physician is in compliance with all laws and regulations applicable to federally funded health care programs.
