Staten Island, NY: A New Dorp woman and her daughter heading to visit a sick relative were blocks away from Brooklyn hospital when they were badly injured in a car accident on June 14, 2001. Lisa Yeager, 44, suffered severe back and hip injuries, requiring surgery, while her daughter, Chelsea Yeager, then 12, suffered a lacerated spleen and severe concussion. The pickup truck, which collided with the two women, was owned by Power House Construction Inc., and driven by Robert Thompson. Thompson had stolen the vehicle from a construction site less than a mile away and was being chased in a second pickup truck driven by Samuel Benitez, Power House's president.
The Yeagers sued Thompson, Benitez, and Power House in state Supreme Court, St. George. Benitez and Power House denied liability, contending the pickup truck had been stolen. However, the case was settled at $975,000 in favor of the Yeagers with the aid of Justice Philip Minardo. (Jan-27-07) [STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE]
