Royce and Mary Evans
Fallbrook, CA: (Feb-07-07) Multiple lawsuits filed in the Superior Court over the cause of the Gavilan fire that ravaged Fallbrook in 2002, reached joint settlement in 2006 according to court records. The lawsuits claimed that embers left over from a cleanup effort on Evans Ranch caused the Gavilan fire. However, ranch owners denied the allegations, ascribing blame to transients. Ranch owners, Royce and Mary Evans of Palm Desert ultimately paid of $1.3 million to settle the cases against them, most of which was covered by insurance. The settlement amount was a small fraction of the more than $42 million in damages that California state officials estimated the fire caused. The lawsuits were filed by Fallbrook residents whose homes were lost or damaged, insurance companies seeking to recover the money they paid to insured homeowners for fire damages, and utility companies that suffered equipment damage in the fire.
