Columbus, OH and Mayor Art Westergaard Jr.
Columbus, OH: (Feb-09-07) A lawsuit was filed by chief of police Gerald Sallmann and his wife Karolina against former Mayor Art Westergaard Jr. and the city alleging that Westergaard had bypassed the Columbus Police and Fire Commission and that he had defamed the couple and interfered with the operation of the police department. The Columbus City Council approved a settlement in which the Sallmanns will receive $30,000. City officials declined to comment on the matter or explain the nature of the settlement, though they did comment on the settlement amount saying that $10,000 will be from the liability provision of the city's insurance coverage and $10,000 will come under the workman's compensation provision of its coverage. The remaining $10,000 will be paid by the city.
