The Stepan Company

Wilmington, DE: (Feb-08-07) The Stepan Company, one of the largest manufacturers of solvents used in cleaning solvents and fluids, a former owner of the now defunct chemical plant on Eames Street, revealed that it had reached an out-of-court settlement worth millions of dollars with nearly two dozen Wilmington residents. Nineteen unnamed residents alleged the company polluted the town's groundwater in the late 1970s, declaring the property a federal superfund site due to the serious level of contamination. Stepan is the first firm to settle personal injury claims with residents. Though the settlement rested at $3 million, Stepan, which sold the property to Olin Chemical Corp. in 1980, did not admit any liability. [WILMINGTON ADVOCATE: GROUNDWATER POLLUTION]
