A.O. Smith Corp. and Paul and Doris Lay

Cumberland, MD: (Feb-15-07) Heather Johnson, 19 months old, succumbed to severe burns over 80% of her body after being placed in a bathtub filled with hot water. She died in a hospital 20 days after the accident. A lawsuit was filed by the administrators of the child's estate, James and Jean Fralish, against the company who made the water heater and the landlords who controlled the temperature. A.O. Smith Corp. and Paul and Doris Lay agreed to pay $245,000. Heather's mother, Lea Ann Fralish, then 19, was charged with third-degree homicide, but was acquitted of the charges in a trial.
