Fayetteville, NC: (Feb-16-07) Darryl Hunt was convicted twice in the stabbing death of Deborah Sykes, a white woman who was raped and killed in 1984 while walking to work downtown. He spent 18 years in prison before DNA evidence helped clear Hunt of the crime. The evidence also led to the identification of another man, Willard Brown, who pleaded guilty to murdering Sykes. After being exonerated by a Forsyth Superior Court judge, the state of North Carolina agreed to pay Hunt $358,545 in restitution. Hunt did not file a lawsuit against Winston-Salem, but has reached an agreement with the city agreeing to pay him $1.6 million as compensation for his prison time.
