Dallas County, TX

This is a settlement for the Civil / Human Rights lawsuit.

Dallas, TX: (Feb-20-07) A prolonged litigation against Dallas County alleging that conditions in the County jail were inhuman was finally settled when the Dallas County Commissioner's Court approved a $950,000 settlement with the families of three men. James Monroe Mims, Kennedy Nickerson, and Clarence Grant contended that their mental illnesses were not timely identified and were inadequately treated by jail personnel. Under the settlement, Mims will receive $540,000 for injuries he sustained in early 2004 after Dallas County jail officials denied him medication for more than two months and turned the water off to his cell. Nickerson will receive $140,000 for injuries he sustained after he was inadvertently released from jail despite being incompetent and unable to care for himself. The estate of Grant, who died in the jail in 2003 after jail personnel failed to recognize his symptoms of diabetes, will receive $270,000. [YAHOO BUSINESS: INHUMAN INMATE]
