Microsoft Corp.
Seattle, WA: (Feb-23-07) Microsoft Corp. was charged by telecommunications equipment maker, Alcatel-Lucent SA, claiming that the software giant had violated two patents related to digital music. Lucent Technologies Inc., which was acquired by Alcatel in 2006, filed 15 patent claims against Gateway Inc. and Dell Inc. for technology developed by Bell Labs, its research arm. In April 2003, Microsoft added itself to the list of defendants, saying the patents were closely tied to its Windows operating system. A federal judge of the US district court in San Diego ordered Microsoft Corp. to pay $1.52 billion in damages to Alcatel-Lucent SA, ending the patent infringement lawsuit.
