Foss Maritime Co.
Edmonds, WA: (Feb-26-07) A settlement was reached ending a three year long negotiation between Foss Maritime Co. and the Suquamish Tribe. The tribe charged Foss with spiritual and cultural damages to its historic saltwater marsh and beach following the 2003 heavy fuel spill at the Chevron Texaco terminal near Edmonds. A Foss-owned barge's tank overflowed while no one was watching and alarms failed to sound. The fuel was swept across Puget Sound and onto the shores of the Suquamish-owned beach on the Kitsap Peninsula. In a settlement reached, Foss agreed to pay a further $265,000 to a federal fund to restore the natural resources at the site, having paid $126,000 earlier. Foss was also fined $577,000 by the state and paid $4.5 million in cleanup costs.
