Raritan Bay Medical Center
Perth Amboy, NJ: (Mar-15-07) The US Department of Justice pressed charges against the Raritan Bay Medical Center, accusing it of improperly increasing charges to Medicare patients in order to obtain enhanced reimbursement. The suit exposed that between January 1998 and August 2003, Raritan Bay purposefully inflated charges for inpatient and outpatient care to make these cases appear more costly than they actually were, and thereby obtained outlier payments from Medicare that it was not entitled to receive. In a settlement reached, the Perth Amboy, NJ Medical Center agreed to pay $7.5 million to the United States to settle allegations that it defrauded the federal Medicare program.
