Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System

Tucson, AZ: (Mar-19-07) The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), was sued claiming that the state's health care program for the poor should provide for dialysis costs for legal and illegal immigrants. The suit requested that if a candidate met the income requirements they were entitled to free treatment, even if other state and federal laws made them ineligible for AHCCCS care. In a settlement reached, AHCCCS agreed to pay for dialysis for about 250 legal and illegal immigrants, providing the person is a US citizen or has been a legal resident alien for at least five years, and has income at or below the federal poverty level. That is $20,650 for a family of four. Sources state that there are about 250 people who will be affected by the settlement. [ARISONA DAILY STAR: DIALYSIS COVERAGE]
