Los Angeles, CA: (Mar-21-07) The wife of noted Beat poet, John Thomas Idlet, filed a federal lawsuit against the LA Sheriff's Department following her husband's death while in police custody. Idlet had begun a four-month jail sentence for a sex offense when he fell sick and did not get to see a doctor for over two weeks. The suit accused the police department of negligence and failure to provide adequate medical care and alleged that the night before his death , Idlet went unexamined for three hours after he was found on the jail floor suffering from shortness of breath. The county reached a settlement and agreed to pay the widow $475,000 as compensation. [ABC NEWS: POLICE CUSTODY DEATH]
