Curtis Wilmore
Charlottesville, VA: (Mar-27-07) Earl Washington Jr., 46, confessed to raping and killing Rebecca Lynn Williams in Culpeper in 1982. Being mildly retarded, he later recanted his confession. After being sentenced to death, appeal lawyers argued that Washington's confession had been coached by investigators who fed him details of the crime. In 2000, DNA testing of semen left on the victim exonerated Washington and pointed to another man, Kenneth Tinsley, a serial rapist. Washington was freed from prison after serving nearly 18 years. Washington sued the estate of Curtis Wilmore, the state trooper who interrogated him, for wrongful conviction. After a jury decided Washington should receive $1.9 million for the time he spent in prison, including nearly 10 years on death row.
