Valero St. Charles Refinery
Picayune, LA: (Apr-10-07) The US Environmental Protection Agency brought charges against Valero St. Charles Refinery accusing it of air pollution violations in 2005 following a finding by Clean Air Task Force, an environmental research group in Boston. Valero was accused of fine-particle pollution, including diesel exhaust, which can cause lung cancer, strokes, heart attacks, infant deaths, asthma attacks and allergies. Valero agreed to settle the lawsuit with a multimillion payout. A part of that amount will be used to retrofit about one-fourth of the St. Charles Parish School's diesel-powered buses with anti-pollution devices. As part of the EPA settlement, Valero agreed to spend $5.5 million on beneficial supplemental environmental projects across areas where it has operations, including Louisiana and spend at least $200,000 on truck and vehicle
emission reductions in the Krotz Springs and St. Charles Parish areas.
