University of California, Irvine Medical Center

Santa Ana, CA: (Apr-16-07) Elodie Irvine filed a medical malpractice suit against the University of California, Irvine Medical Center after having waited four years for organ transplants at the hospital before she went to another hospital and got the desperately needed procedures within two months. Irvine, who was diagnosed with a deadly kidney and liver disease, stated that the medical center was negligent in dealing with her situation. The University of California, Irvine Medical Center's liver transplant program was shut down in November 2005 after a federal report found that more than 30 people died while waiting for liver transplants during a two-year period. Irvine won a settlement of $50,000. Irvine later recanted on the settlement amount and sued her lawyer, claiming he didn't tell her about serious problems with the transplant program that could have won her a larger settlement. The malpractice suit has been restored in hopes of getting her a bigger settlement. [UNION TRIBUNE: LIVER TRANSPLANT MALPRACTICE]
