Atlantic City, NJ
Atlantic City, NJ: (Apr-21-07) James Andros, an Atlantic City police officer erroneously accused of killing his wife, filed suit against the city and spent years battling the system seeking exoneration. Dr. Elliot Gross, the on-call Medical Examiner in the case, made the error of listing 31-year-old Ellen Andros' death March 31, 2001, as a homicide through asphyxiation. Gross later admitted that he did not read microscopic slides that would have shown Ellen Andros died of natural causes. The suit alleged negligence on the part of Gross, the county, Atlantic County Medical Examiner Dr. Hydow Park, and registered nurse Barbara Fenton, who specialized in pathology. In a settlement reached, the city agreed to pay Andros $2.3 million as compensation.
