Richard Scrushy
Birmingham, AL: (Apr-23-07) The US Securities and Exchange Commission filed charges against former HealthSouth Corp. Chief Executive Richard Scrushy, accusing him of being party to a huge accounting fraud. According to SEC claims, Scrushy profited close to $77.5 million in the $2.7 billion fraud at HealthSouth. In a settlement reached with the SEC, Scrushy agreed to pay $77.5 million of his alleged profits as well as another $3.5 million in civil penalties. Though Scrushy agreed to the settlement, he did so without admitting any wrongdoing. The $81 million will be paid to injured investors, making it one of the largest settlements the SEC has achieved with any individual.
