LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
San Francisco, CA
San Francisco, CA: (Apr-30-07) Amy Lee, the former head of San Francisco's Building Inspection Department, filed suit against the city alleging she faced pregnancy discrimination and was humiliated publicly by city officials. The suit stemmed from Lee's confirmation hearing April 4, 2005, before the Building Inspection Commission. Lee's critics from the Residential Builders Association packed the room that day and took turns slamming her during public comment over what they took to be her lack of qualifications to replace department Director James Hutchinson. In the suit filed with Department of Fair Employment and Housing, Lee said the comments were hurtful and humiliating, and that the building commissioners or the deputy city attorney who was present should have stopped them. In a settlement reached, the city agreed to pay over $156,000 in damages and attorney's fees to Lee so she would not sue the city for sexual harassment. The settlement would give Lee a cash payout of $21,693 for her suffering, 20 weeks of reinstated paid maternity leave valued at $67,540, and $66,800 in attorney fees.
