Sportsmen's Athletic Club

Norwich, CT: (Apr-30-07) A 1999 shooting at the Sportsmen's Athletic Club led to a spate of lawsuits, forcing the prized piece of city real estate to be up for sale. Proceeds from the sale, which includes nearly 1 acre of land, will benefit victims of the shooting, who were awarded more than $2 million in a recent settlement. In April 2007, a court judgment awarded $1.8 million to the family of Joseph DuBose, who died after the November 14 shooting at the club that also left three others injured. Another $290,000 was awarded to victims Xavier Cluff and Jermaine Floyd who received severe injuries from the shootout. The civil lawsuit settlements hated the impending foreclosure of the 40 High St. private club along with a May 5 auction. James Davis III of Norwich, who was responsible for the shooting was convicted in 2004, is serving a 48-year prison sentence. [NORWICH BULLETIN: CLUB SHOOTING]
