MGM Mirage Inc.
Biloxi, MS: (May-02-07) The Justice Department filed charges against MGM Mirage Inc., the world's second-largest casino company, following a complaint filed by a patron, alleging that fell in a shower because he couldn't reach shower controls. The suit claimed that the hotel had violated the Americans with Disabilities Act in making in designing their hotel not keeping in mind the special needs of the disabled. In a settlement reached, MGM Mirage agreed to pay $55,000 in civil penalties and make structural changes during future construction or renovation at the Las Vegas and Mississippi hotels. An estimated cost for such corrections was put at $20 million. In addition to providing accessible parking spaces and proper signs, the casino company agreed to widen toilet doorways in hotel rooms to 32 inches, add wheelchair accessible seating at bars, restaurants and clubs, including the House of Blues and Mandalay Bay Events Center, and provide some rooms in various classes with alert systems designed to rouse deaf or hearing impaired guests.
