Manalapan, NJ
Asbury Park, NJ: (May-02-07) Manalapan Township patrolmen Steven Turner and Peter Chalfin filed charges against the township alleging that three black youths were harassed because of their race. The suit stemmed from an incident that took place when a group of six children were approached by two police officers who were doing their jobs answering a complaint from a concerned resident. On being asked to take their hands out of their pockets, three individuals complied and the other three did not. The officers had to instruct the youths a number of times to comply, unsuccessfully, while being treated with contempt and disrespect by the three youths. The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey announced that they had reached a settlement with the Manalapan Police Department. As part of the settlement, the township agreed to pay $275,000, ending the racial discrimination suit.
