Pacific Steel
Berkeley, CA: (May-02-07) The Bay Area Quality Management District filed charges against Pacific Steel, a West Berkeley steel foundry, alleging that the steel company is one of the Bay Area's worst polluters. In a settlement reached with the Bay Area Quality Management District, Pacific Steel agreed to pay $150,000 in fines and install air pollution control equipment on a furnace that has been a source of pollution for years. A monitoring center would be set up nearby so air district officials could continue to check the emissions from the plant. The settlement with the air district came after the steel company reached a settlement with an environmental group in February 2007 over alleged violations of the Clean Air Act. Despite the settlements, Pacific Steel is still facing legal hurdles over its operations. The city of Berkeley is reviewing the foundry's use permits, which determine whether the 75-year-old firm can remain in business.
