Edward Waters College
Jacksonville, FL: (May-06-07) The family of Johnathan Wesley Glenn, an 18-year-old student at Edward Waters College, filed charges against the college after Glenn was fatally shot a day after he wrote an essay critical about campus safety. Glenn was a freshman when two men approached him and demanded a sports jersey he was wearing, his cell phone and wallet while he stood outside his dorm in 2004, leading him to write a class essay saying he felt unsafe on campus. The lawsuit claimed that the college had inadequate security and misrepresented the safety of the campus. In a settlement reached, Edward Waters College agreed to pay the family $2.75 million to end the wrongful death lawsuit. Kenell Dashawn Coleman is serving a life sentence on a first-degree murder charge for Glenn's death. Jermell Maurice Campbell testified against Coleman and pleaded guilty to armed robbery charges. He is serving eight years in prison.
