VOA Associates and Jacobs Facilities
Chicago, IL: (May-08-07) The Consolidated High School District 230 filed charges against VOA Associates and Jacobs Facilities, its former architect and construction manager, alleging that both companies failed to ethically perform in running the $146 million overhaul of the district's three schools: Andrew High School in Tinley Park, Sandburg High School in Orland Park and Stagg High School in Palos Hills. The construction project went $28 million more than its original budget projection and was completed more than a year behind schedule. State regulators shut it down at one point because asbestos was not being removed properly. The high concept makeover included custom floor tiles in complex patterns, airy open spaces and talking garbage cans. But teachers and administrators complained that basics, such as working lockers, new bathrooms and functioning blackboards, were left out. There were fewer new classrooms than originally proposed. The suit, which was fought for over four years, was finally settled as the district agreed to settle for $1.4 million. Each company will pay $500,000 cash to the district, according to the settlement. The remaining $400,000 is in fees owed to both companies that will go unpaid.
