South Seminole Middle School
Sanford, FL: (May-09-07) The family of an autistic student filed a lawsuit against former Seminole County teacher Kathleen Garrett, claiming that the teacher abused the autistic child. In a settlement reached with the Seminole County School Board, the family received a settlement of $100,000 to resolve claims. This was the third settlement with students who were in Garrett's class at South Seminole Middle School in 2004, when she was arrested on charges of abuse, having cost the board nearly $2 million in damages, with at least two more cases still pending. Garrett received three years' probation in March 2007, after a January conviction for felony child abuse. In another settlement reached, the board approved a $1.3 million settlement with the mother of a blind autistic boy who claimed that the boy was locked in a closet and mistreated by Garrett. A third student received $520,000 for similar charges in April 2007.
